Doreen Atkinson earns WE United’s first Platinum Medal in Working Equitation

Doreen Atkinson, “S” Judge, competitor, and riding instructor, made Working Equitation history by becoming the first member of WE United to earn the scores required for a Platinum Lifetime Rider Medal. The award, which recognizes members’ lifetime achievement in the sport, requires riders to demonstrate not just proficiency, but expertise.

To earn a Platinum medal, riders:

  • Must have two (2) Dressage scores at the Masters level of 62% or higher from two (2) different WE United “R” or “S” judges or WAWE judges.
  • Must have two (2) Ease of Handling scores at the Masters level of 62% or higher from two (2) different WE United “R” or “S” judges or WAWE judges.
  • In addition to the above four (4) scores, must have one (1) Dressage score and one (1) Ease of Handling score at the Masters level of 65% or higher for a total of six (6) eligible scores.
  • Scores for all of the above are only eligible if the rider successfully completed all trials in the competition in which the score was earned.

Although scores can be earned on different horses, Doreen earned all of hers on her self-trained Half-Lusitano Obadi del Dios. She and Obadi competed in some of the first Working Equitation competitions to be offered in the United States, and have steadily made their way up the levels. The two provide clear evidence of the ways in which the sport favors consistent, steady training and a determination to forge a strong partnership between horse and rider.

To qualify for her Platinum Medal, Doreen earned the following scores:

  • 64.60% in Dressage, Masters, April 22-23, 2017 B-Rated Competition, Taylor, Texas.  Judge: Wayne Hipsley.
  • 64.81% in Dressage, Masters, February 17-18, 2018 B-Rated Competition, Waco, Texas. Judge: Rebecca Algar.
  • 65.37% in Dressage, Masters, October 10-12, 2018 A-Rated Competition, Katy, Texas. Judges: Polly Limond & Wayne Hipsley.
  • 75.24% in Ease of Handling, Masters, April 22-23, 2017 B-Rated Competition, Taylor, Texas.  Judge: Wayne Hipsley.
  • 66.50% in Ease of Handling, Masters, February 17-18, 2018 B-Rated Competition, Waco, Texas. Judge: Rebecca Algar.
  • 68.29% in Ease of Handling, Masters, October 10-12, 2018 A-Rated Competition, Katy, Texas. Judges: Polly Limond & Wayne Hipsley.

Congratulations, Doreen, on this wonderful accomplishment. To say we are proud of you would be a serious understatement!
