Texas member Katy Spell and her 11-year-old Azteca, Francesca’s a Cocoa Chica (Tuscany Hi Dice x Lavrador), finished the 2017 competition season tied for 6th place in the year-end standings in Region 4.
Katy has owned “Frannie” for five years now. “She was abandoned at a local barn, and I bought her in 2012,” she explains. “She is a very special mare; she is half Lusitano and half Quarter Horse.”
“I was looking for a sport to do with Frannie, and I live very close to Haras Dos Cavaleiros in Magnolia, Texas. I went to a couple of “play days” in 2014; that’s how we got started.”
She says she has told a lot of people about Working Equitation. “I tell them, it is the hardest sport I have done, but the most rewarding because of what I have learned to do with my horse…and the people!”
Among the people who have made a difference for Katy are, “Rebecca Algar, Tarrin Warren and many others in the Heart of Texas WE Family.”
In addition to their working equitation, Katy and Frannie enjoy trail riding, cow sorting, participating in local parades, and barrel racing.
